A little history on Big Cob…

Yes, it’s a unique name for a seed company, but it’s a name that is rich in its’ heritage.

The Big Cob brand originated as the website moniker for McGowen Crop Protection Service, the agricultural consulting company started by Jim McGowen (BS — agronomy UNL) in 1998 in and around the Utica / Beaver Crossing, Nebraska area. Jim’s vision and drive helped grow MCPS into one of the largest distributors of agricultural seed and chemical in the area, and his prowess as a crop scout and consultant has paid off time after time for his many satisfied customers.

As the years past, Jim’s knowledge of the plant growth cycles, the interactions of various hybrids with a wide range of soil conditions and other variables grew. He began to see an opportunity for a new line of seed, specifically designed to maximize profits for growers in the Midwest, while not being encumbered by the tremendous overhead that other national brands had to deal with. It was at this time that Jim met Mr. Ben Benson (BA - Business Administration Nebraska +Wesleyan University).

Ben, co-owner and Seed Operations manager for Big Cob Hybrids, is a second-generation seedsman. His father, Mr. David Benson, is a nationally recognized expert in seed genetics. He holds a number of patents for many of the most successful varieties of corn grown in the world today. Ben’s knowledge of the inter-workings of the seed business and his expertise founded in his business degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University brought the finishing touches to the Big Cob Hybrid picture.

Together, Jim and Ben have worked hard to bring the Big Cob line of seed products to the market place. Using the simple tenants of honesty, hard work, and integrity, these two men have forged a product line that will shake the foundations of the industry. Big Cob hybrids feature extremely resilient plants, able to withstand the kind of abuse that only Mother Nature is capable of dishing out. But they are not just tough; these same hybrids will also deliver maximum yields, year after year.

"We don’t claim to be the best at anything. We’d rather prove it to you!"
